Purple Mountain Observatory just released their latest product, the ‘Calyx’. The brands first step into the world of footwear - pun intended.

I was fortunate enough to be invited along to the launch event of this exciting new product, a few days spent camping in the South Downs to celebrate this pivotal moment. I felt honoured to be involved, especially as this brand has been there since starting my own venture with Outside Intel. On my first big expedition to North Wales, I was kitted out with some very early PMO products.

On the trip I got a chance to chat to the founder Matt Braun about the past, present and future of the brand and it was pretty inspiring. To have watched this brand grow in the way it has in the past few years has been surreal. PMO create products that hit that sweet spot between function and fashion, producing some of the most eye-catching pieces you’ll see, utilising patterns, fabrics and colours you won’t find anywhere else.
So what about the Calyx? Upon first glance, you will definitely be intrigued. The Calyx is the modern solution to dry feet when camping. You know those dewy mornings around camp, slip these on and you’re out of trouble. PMO worked closely with Vibram to produce something that looks great, yet maintains quality. Despite being made for the outdoors, the Calyx make a great supplement to city living - especially in London where it’s always pissing it down.

PMO is a brand that knows its audience. And is made by the people, for the people. Attending the trip were those who have supported the brand since day one. Creatives from the outdoor community, artists, musicians and other genuine believers of the brand. The trip included everything you would expect from an outdoor brand; foraging, hiking, camping and building massive fires.
The Calyx is a great example of PMO being able to step into new spaces with confidence, they’ve made something that looks great and stands up to the elements. This is only the beginning for what else the brand is capable of and I’m looking to see what the future holds for Purple Mountain.
